The Truckload Carriers Association (TCA) has named Ashley Kennedy, a professional truck driver for Epes Transport System, Inc., of Greensboro, North Carolina, as its latest Highway Angel.

On October 1, 2010, Kennedy was on his way home driving along I-95 in North Carolina when he saw the car in front of him blow a tire at 70 mph. The occupants made it to the side of the road okay, but Kennedy stopped to make sure everything was alright. He called for help and told the couple he would not leave them until help arrived. They waited for an hour; when no help arrived, he finally changed the tire himself.

The couple later wrote a very complimentary e-mail to Epes Transport System wanting the company to know “what a great person we think [Kennedy] is.” They went on to say, “[For] a gentleman in his 70s to change the tire himself … he was truly an angel in disguise.”

Since the program’s inception in August 1997, hundreds of drivers have been recognized as Highway Angels for the exemplary kindness, courtesy, and courage they have displayed while on the job.
