Two professional truck drivers have been named Highway Angels by the Truckload Carriers Association (TCA): Jesus Alvarado of Santa Teresa, New Mexico, and Manny Flores, Jr., of El Paso, Texas. The team drives for Stagecoach Cartage & Distribution, LP, of El Paso, Texas. On August 9, 2013, Alvarado and Flores were driving along Highway 177 near Carrizo Springs, Texas, when they saw smoke up ahead. It was about 4:30 p.m. As they got closer, they saw a tanker truck on fire. The driver was using water from his cooler to splash it on the flames.

Alvarado, who was driving, brought their truck to a stop. He grabbed the fire extinguisher and threw it to Flores. Flores ran to the tanker and put the fire out. Both men stayed with the tanker driver while he called his company to let them know what had happened. After they were sure everything was under control, they finally continued on their way.

TCA has presented Alvarado and Flores with Highway Angel lapel pins, certificates, and patches. The organization also gave Stagecoach Cartage & Distribution, LP, a certificate acknowledging that two of its drivers are Highway Angels.

Since the program’s inception in August 1997, hundreds of drivers have been recognized as Highway Angels for the exemplary kindness, courtesy, and courage they have displayed while on the job.
